Vaibhav Suryavanshi makes history as youngest-ever IPL debutant

Vaibhav Suryavanshi has officially become the youngest player to debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL), etching his name into the record books at just 14 years and 23 days old. The young left-handed batter made his sensational debut for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 19, 2025, in a match against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Opening the innings alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, Suryavanshi made an unforgettable entrance. On just the fourth ball of the chase—which also happened to be his very first delivery in the IPL—he launched Shardul Thakur for a massive six over cover, instantly sending shockwaves through the stadium. He followed it up with another six off Avesh Khan in the next over, showcasing fearless intent and raw talent well beyond his years.

Suryavanshi went on to score a dazzling 34 runs off 20 balls, laced with three sixes and two boundaries, before being stumped. His debut wasn’t just historic because of his age—it was the kind of explosive arrival that cricket fans dream of witnessing.

Even before the first ball was bowled, history had already been made. A 14-year-old walking out to open in the world’s most competitive T20 league? Unreal. The cricketing world took notice, including Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who posted on X (formerly Twitter): Woke up to watch an 8th grader play in the IPL!!!! What a debut!,” Sundar Pichai posted.

This debut broke the previous record for the youngest IPL player, which was held by Prayas Ray Barman, who debuted in 2019 at the age of 16 years and 157 days for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

While Suryavanshi’s historic debut was a major talking point, the match itself ended in a thrilling last-ball victory for the Lucknow Super Giants, who edged out the Rajasthan Royals by two runs. Avesh Khan’s impressive three-wicket haul in the final overs secured the win for LSG. Despite the loss, Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s remarkable entry into the IPL promises an exciting future for this young talent. Rajasthan Royals head coach Rahul Dravid has acknowledged Suryavanshi’s exciting potential but has also emphasized a cautious approach to his development within the team.
