Modi, Musk’s Tech Talk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a constructive conversation with Elon Musk, delving into a range of issues of mutual interest. The discussion revisited topics covered during their meeting in Washington DC earlier this year, underscoring the shared vision for technological advancement.
The Prime Minister highlighted the immense potential for collaboration between India and the United States in the domains of technology and innovation. He reaffirmed India’s steadfast commitment to advancing partnerships in these areas.
He wrote in a post on X: “Spoke to @elonmusk and talked about various issues, including the topics we covered during our meeting in Washington DC earlier this year. We discussed the immense potential for collaboration in the areas of technology and innovation. India remains committed to advancing our partnerships with the US in these domains.”
Modi’s conversation with Musk comes as India is working towards securing a bilateral trade agreement with the US to offset the brunt of US President Donald Trump’s potential tariffs.
It also comes days before US Vice-President JD Vance’s four-day trip to India.
Elon Musk, who is often seen as an ally of Donald Trump and also heads the satirical-sounding but real Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is ramping up efforts to expand his business empire into India.
In March, Musk’s satellite venture, Starlink, inked deals with two of India’s largest telecom companies to bring satellite internet to the country. The company is currently awaiting regulatory clearance to roll out services.
At the same time, Tesla appears to be gearing up for its long-awaited entry into the Indian market. The EV giant has begun recruiting for multiple roles in Delhi and Mumbai and is reportedly scouting for showroom locations in both cities.
Interestingly, Musk’s platform X (formerly Twitter) is engaged in a legal battle with the Indian government, even as his other ventures seek approval to operate—a complex backdrop to his India ambitions.
Meanwhile, U.S. Senator J.D. Vance is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 21, the opening day of his India visit, to discuss economic, trade, and geopolitical ties. Vance will be joined by his wife, Usha Vance—whose family hails from Andhra Pradesh—and their children.
The visit unfolds amid escalating U.S.-China trade tensions. Adding to the pressure, Donald Trump imposed a 27% tariff on Indian exports on April 2, though later announced a 90-day suspension of the move. Since then, Washington and New Delhi have been pushing to fast-track a broader trade agreement.
