FASTag Out, GPS In: India’s new toll system starts May 1 | All about it

FASTag Out, GPS In: The Indian government has initiated the transition from the existing FASTag system to a more advanced satellite-based toll collection system utilising the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). This move aims to enhance tolling efficiency by charging motorists based on the actual distance traveled on highways, rather than fixed tolls for specific stretches.

The rollout of the GNSS-based tolling system is planned in phases. Initially, the focus is on commercial vehicles, with dedicated GNSS lanes being set up at toll plazas to facilitate seamless travel. Vehicles equipped with GNSS On-Board Units (OBUs) will be able to travel toll-free for up to 20 km daily on the same highway section, promoting local mobility. The system was expected to be operational by April 2025. However, the implementation has faced delays due to privacy and security concerns.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, recently announced in a public address in Nagpur that the satellite-based GNSS toll collection system is set to launch by the end of this month. He stated that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is preparing to roll out the new tolling method within the next 15 days.

How GNSS-based toll system works?

Similar to FASTag, which relies on RFID technology and a windshield-mounted tag, the GNSS-based system tracks vehicle movement using satellite technology. Vehicles equipped with an on-board unit (OBU) or tracker will have their highway usage monitored in real-time. Toll charges will be calculated based on the actual distance travelled and automatically deducted from a linked digital wallet. The new system is also expected to offer both prepaid and postpaid payment options for added convenience.

Why India launching GNSS-based toll system?

While FASTag significantly cut down waiting times at toll plazas, it has been plagued by technical issues. Persistent problems like long queues, system glitches, and tag misuse have raised concerns. To overcome these challenges, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is now gearing up to transition to a satellite-based toll collection system.

How will GNSS-based toll system help commuters?

  • It will cut down waiting time by removing the need to stop at booths
  • It will prevent manual errors and reduce the risk of fraud
  • It will enable a more seamless and contactless driving experience

What FASTag users must know

-From May 1, install a government-approved GPS device in your vehicle

-After this, link your bank account to the new system

-After fully onboarded, remove your FASTag sticker
