Road safety continues to be a major issue in India with reports of 1,51,113 accident-related deaths in 2019. And according to the data of the Ministry of Road Transport And Highways, Delhi tops among million-plus Indian cities in terms of those killed in road accidents in 2019. The reason why Delhi Traffic Police has been constantly trying to find ways to ensure road safety in the city. In the latest, it has revised the maximum speed limits for different categories of motor vehicles plying on Delhi roads.
As per the fresh notification issued by Delhi Traffic Police the speed limit in the national capital has been capped at 70 km/hour. All private four-wheelers like cars, jeeps, and cabs will be liable for traffic penalties if they exceed this limit in the city.
Speed limits for two-wheelers and commercial vehicles
Likewise, the maximum speed limit for two-wheelers has been revised to 60 km/hour while the commercial vehicles will be liable for the penalties if they cross the limits of 40 km/hour on most of the roads within the national capital.
According to the gazetted notice issued by the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, the penalty for over-speeding in the national capital now ranges between 2,000 and 4,000 Rupees which is subject to the type of vehicle. Those who are found speeding or racing on public roads will have to cough up a fine of 5,000 Rupees.
List of roads for restricted for maximum speed limit
Alongside, in the new traffic rules, Delhi Traffic Police have also listed the roads where vehicles can hit the top speed.
Private four-wheeler vehicles can ply at the maximum speed limit of 70 km/hour on NH-48 from Parade Road/Gurgaon Road Crossing to Delhi Gurgaon Border, DND Flyover-Mayur Vihar Link Road, NH-44 from Singhu Border to Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar, Noida Toll Road and Saleemgarh Bypass Road.
The 70 km/hour top speed limit will also be applicable to NH-9 from Millennium Park to Gazipur Border, NH-9 from Ghevra Xing to Tikri Border, Northern Access Road from Red Light NSG to T-Point of Northern Access & Central Spin and Central Spine Road from Mahipalpur Chowk to Terminal III, IGI Airport.
30 km/hour speed limit for all vehicles on all minor roads
Meanwhile, the top 60 km/hour has been advised on several roads which include NH-44 from Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar to Mukarba Chowk and Barapulla Nallah Road from Sarai Kale Khan upto Aurobindo Marg Xing.
Similarly, maximum 50 km/hour speed for cars has been prescribed on various stretches including on NH-44 from Mukarba Chowk to Azadpur Chowk and Ring Road from Azadpur to Chandgi Ram Akhara via Model Town, Kingsway Camp, Mall Road.
Speed has been capped at just 30 km/hour for all vehicles on all minor roads inside all residential areas, commercial complexes like malls, as well as service lanes.
