The Election Commission (EC) of India announced the schedule for holding assembly elections 2023 in five states today. Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Mizoram will go to polls on different days from November 7-30. The counting of votes will take place on December 3. Total voters in Mizoram are 8.52 lakh, 2.03 crore in Chhattisgarh, 5.6 cr in Madhya Pradesh, 5.25 crore in Rajasthan and 3.17 crore in Telangana, said Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar while announcing the polling dates for these states.
The election dates for the five states are as follows
Mizoram: November 7
Chhattisgarh: November 7 and 17
Madhya Pradesh: November 17
Rajasthan: November 23
Telangana: November 30
Telangana assembly elections 2023
The Assembly Elections will be held in Telangana on November 30,
Telangana is set to witness a triangular contest between the BJP, the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi and the Congress in the upcoming assembly election. In the previous Assembly election held in 2018, BRS managed to win 88 seats out of 119 and had a dominant vote share of 47.4%. Congress came at a distant second with 19 seats. Its vote share was 28.7%. Congress and BJP are the key players in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Telangana is expected to witness a triangular contest between the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi, Congress and BJP.
Madhya Pradesh assembly elections 2023
In 2018, the Congress won the Madhya Pradesh elections, but lost power to the BJP in March 2020 after the resignations of 22 legislators. The BJP has since 2003 been in power (barring 18 months between 2018 and 2020) in the state, where its government, led by Shivraj Singh Chouhan, faces anti-incumbency and infighting.
Chhattisgarh assembly elections 2023
Congress is in power in Chhattisgarh. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which is in opposition in the state is making an aggressive push to regain lost ground. In the last polls, the Congress won 68 of the total 90 assembly seats, while the BJP finished a distant second at 15.
Mizoram
The date of polls for the Mizoram Assembly Elections 2023 is November 7, 2023 and the date of counting of votes is December 3, 2023.
Rajasthan assembly elections 2023
The election in Rajasthan is crucial for the ruling Congress, as it comes months ahead of the 2024 general election. In the 2018 election, the Congress had won 100 seats, one short of the halfway mark. The BJP had suffered heavy losses and won 73.
The tenure of Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh Legislative Assemblies ends in January 2024 while that of Mizoram ends in December this year.
