From the playboy image to the chair of Prime Minister. That’s what seems to be the full story of Imran Khan. But that’s not all. In between, he has been called Taliban Khan for being an advocate of terrorists and he has married thrice. To boot, he has recently claimed that he is not a robot. In fact, he was talking about Pakistani men, not himself, but that betrayed his own thoughts on the matter and explained Imran Khan’s playboy image of the past. After all, he had said it himself in those days that he was not a saint.
To understand the current context, you need to first read what he said in a recent interview with ‘Axios on HBO’. Here it goes, ‘If a woman is wearing very few clothes, it will have an impact on the men, unless they are robots. I mean it’s common sense.’
Aghast? Well, you must be. Since it’s coming from a Prime Minister of a nation. And this is how Imran Khan tries to put it in perspective. Read on: “It is a completely different society, way of life here. So if you raise temptation in the society to the point, and all these young guys have nowhere to go, it has consequences in the society.”
Pakistan Prime Minister blames women for rape crimes
Can you imagine this happening in any other democracy? The irony is that Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was clarifying his recent statement on the rise in rape cases in his country which has created a furore because he seemed to be justifying the incidents blaming women for vulgarity advising them to cover themselves up instead to prevent temptation leading to rape crimes.
But, in a bid to clarify himself, he further underscored his bizarre beliefs on the ‘purdah’ system in Pakistan triggering a massive outrage in his country and beyond. Social media platforms are replete with memes and mockery against the Pakistan PM while women’s rights activists have been up in arms against him labelling Imran Khan as a compulsive misogynist.
Taslima Nasreen slams Imran for linking rape with clothes
Renowned author Taslima Nasreen joined the chorus flaying him for linking rape and sexual violence to the dress of women again. Taslima Nasreen dug out a shirtless picture of the former cricketer to share it on Twitter saying, “If a man is wearing very few clothes, it will have an impact on women, unless they are robots.”
Imran bashed Bollywood for rising rape crimes in Pakistan
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan has stoked controversies with his reckless statements on the issue in the past as well. Recently he bashed Bollywood accusing it of obscenity and blaming it for the rise in sexual violence cases in Pakistan. In April, during a Question & Answer session with the public on live television, Imran Khan had said, “this entire concept of purdah is to avoid temptation, not everyone has the willpower to avoid it.”
Well, it looks like Imran Khan must be speaking from his experience with his willpower. But condoning heinous crimes like rape with his trivial remarks and putting the onus on women to dress properly certainly does not behove a Prime Minister.
Understandably, even his former wives were unsparingly vehement in condemning the Pakistan Prime Minister’s statement. Reacting to his remarks in April, his first wife Jemima Goldsmith quoted the Holy Quran to remind him that the “onus is on men.” While, Reham Khan, the second wife who divorced Imran Khan within ten months in 2015, lambasted him harder writing, “the less he speaks, the better it will be for all.”
