Last year, the peak of the pandemic halted just short of 1 lakh cases to the relief of 1.3 billion Indian population but this year there seems to be no stopping for the Covid-19 virus as the daily spike of cases has crossed the 2-lakh mark today. And the peak of the second wave is still far unknown this year. This time, India has left the worst-hit United States and Brazil far behind in the single-day spike in infections.
With 2,00,739 new covid cases in the last 24 hours, India’s total number of cases now stands at 1,40,74,564, according to the Union Health Ministry. India’s total cases are second behind the United States and its deaths are fourth behind the US, Brazil and Mexico.
There are 14,71,877 active cases in the country. With 1,038 fresh COVID-related fatalities in the last 24 hours, the country’s overall death toll rose to 1,73,123.

Ten states including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Rajasthan have shown a high rise in the COVID daily new cases. 80.76% of the new cases are reported from these 10 states.
Maharashtra has reported the highest daily new cases at 58,952. It is followed by Uttar Pradesh with 20,439 while Delhi reported 17,282 new cases.
India Covid-19 Vaccination
A total of 1,28,98,314 COVID-19 vaccine doses were administered to people of the eligible groups across the country during the Tika Utsav, informed Union Health Ministry on Thursday.
“The four days of Tika Utsav saw intense vaccination activity. 29,33,418 vaccination doses were given on 11 April, another 40,04,521 were administered the next day. The corresponding figure for April 13 and 14 stands at 26,46,528 and 33,13,848,” the ministry said.
Weekend curfew in Delhi
Delhi government has imposed a weekend curfew in a view of the grim situation, CM Arvind Kejriwal announced in presser today. “To control the spread of Covid-19, it has been decided to impose weekend curfew in Delhi,” the Chief Minister said after a high-level meeting with Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal.
