India registered a steady increase in Covid-19 cases for the 25th straight day today. With more than 90,000 new daily coronavirus cases, the country has recorded this year’s biggest single-day jump. 93,249 new daily Covid cases were registered in the last 24 hours. This is the biggest daily rise in cases since 19 September, when 93,337 fresh infections were recorded.
To take stock of the worrying situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting. All senior officers — including the Cabinet Secretary, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, the Health Secretary participated in the meeting.
According to the Union Health Ministry, 80.96% of these new cases are from eight States- Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Maharashtra has reported the highest daily new cases at 49,447. This is followed by Chhattisgarh with 5,818 cases while Karnataka reported 4,373 new cases.
With these additional cases, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country has reached 1,24,85,509. With 513 new deaths, the death toll in India has gone up to 1,64,623. There are 6,91,597 active cases in the nation as of now. The active caseload was at its lowest at 1,35,926 on February 12.

Five states, namely Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Kerala and Punjab cumulatively account for 76.41% of the total active cases in the country. Maharashtra alone accounts for more than half (58.19%) of the total active caseload of the country.
The worrying surge in the cases has prompted many states to reinforce curbs, including shutting down of schools, colleges, lockdowns, night curfew, restrictions on gatherings for marriages and other family functions.
Meanwhile, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, a total of 7,59,79,651 people have been vaccinated across the country till now.
From 1 April, the government started vaccinating all people above 45 years. India started its vaccination drive on 16 January with priority given to all healthcare and frontline workers in the first phase. The second phase started on 1 March where doses were administered to people above the age of 60 and those between 45 and 59 years with specific comorbidities.
