Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday made a strong pitch for building a new India. Speaking at the centenary celebrations of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) he said, ‘When we talk about the vision of new India, we should not see the nation’s development through a political prism. When we come together for a larger objective, then it is possible that some elements get disturbed, and they will do anything to fulfil their vested interests.’
PM Modi reiterates ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ mantra
The Prime Minister further said that the resources of the country belong to every citizen. ‘The country is on the path where no citizen would be left behind because of their religion and everyone would get equal opportunities so that everyone can fulfil their dreams. Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas is the mantra behind it,’ he said.
PM Modi hails AMU’s language research
He also praised AMU’s vast research on the languages and said that the efforts helped bolster India’s relations with several countries across the world.
“In the last 100 years, AMU has also worked to strengthen India’s relations with many countries of the world. The research done here on Urdu, Arabic and Persian languages, research on Islamic literature, gives new energy to India’s cultural relations with the entire Islamic world.’
PM Narendra Modi, in AMU address
AMU represents the culture of India, says PM Modi
Addressing the AMU centenary celebration via video conferencing, the Prime Minister said, ‘Today, people from AMU have trained in hundreds of countries of the world, along with the best places in India. The educated people of AMU represent the culture of India, anywhere in the world. History of education attached to AMU buildings is India’s valuable heritage.’
Earlier in the day, PM Modi released a postal stamp as part of centenary celebrations of AMU.
PM Modi’s first participation at AMU programme
This is the first time in five decades that an Indian prime minister has attended an AMU event as the chief guest. Before PM Modi, former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri had participated in a programme of the University in 1964. First Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had visited the AMU four times, but not to attend any event.
AMU was declared a University in 1920, through an Act of Indian Legislative Council by elevating the Mohammedan Anglo Oriental (MAO) College to the status of a Central University. MAO College was set up in 1877 by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. The University has a campus spread over 467.6 hectares of land in the city of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh.
